You already chose your destination and the dates, what’s next?

Travel Documentation:

  1. Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your trip and has any necessary visas.

Transportation:

  1. Figure out the best way to get to your destination, check different options before making a final decision(bus, train, plane, shared ride, etc). Take into consideration the arrival time, and make sure you won’t be late for the check-in in your accommodation.
  1. If going by plane, check transportation to and from the airport both in your hometown and destination. Airports are usually outside the city, and you might need to book tickets for the shuttle in advance.
  2. Don’t forget to consider transportation between multiple cities if your trip involves visiting several places.
  3. Research public transportation options in your destination, ensuring you’re well-prepared to get around once you arrive.

Accommodation:

  1. Secure accommodation in each city you’ll be visiting, ideally opting for locations closer to tourist sights or city centers to minimize transportation costs. Consider booking socially active hostels to connect with fellow travelers for sightseeing, meals, and entertainment.

Sightseeing:

  1. Compile a list of must-see sights in each town or city you plan to visit.
  2. Check if tickets to popular tourist attractions need to be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.
  3. For attractions located outside the city center, research transportation options or consider taking an organized tour. It might be more expensive, but also much more enjoyable.

Food:

  1. Explore highlights of the local cuisine and seek out recommended restaurants favored by locals for an authentic dining experience. Also ask the receptionist in your accommodation about their favorite places.
  2. If you have dietary restrictions, research dining options in advance to ensure you can enjoy local cuisine safely.

Safety:

  1. Review your insurance coverage or buy travel insurance to ensure you’re adequately protected during your journey
  2. Make copies of important travel documents such as your passport, ID, travel insurance policy, and itinerary, and store them securely both digitally and in hard copy.
  3.  Memorize your login details for email and social media accounts. This way you will be able to contact your family and won’t lose access to your tickets and reservations if you lose your phone.
  4. Keep a certain amount of cash separately from your wallet, preferably in a different bag or pocket.
  5. Nominate a trusted friend or family member to check in with them from time to time and share your location via Google Maps with them.

Finance:

  1. Familiarize yourself with currency exchange rates and payment options, check the potential fees associated with paying by card or withdrawing cash.
  2. Consider obtaining a travel-friendly card like Revolut and carry a combination of cash and cards for financial flexibility.

Connection:

  1. Arrange for mobile internet access to stay connected while abroad, whether through a local SIM card or an international data plan.

Packing:

  1. Select a suitable backpack or luggage based on your transportation options and pack light to streamline your journey.
  2. Pack clothing according to the weather forecast and prioritize comfort for long days of exploration. Pack light! There are laundry machines even on hostels, so you won’t run out of clean clothes.
  3.  Prepare a packing list, so you don’t feel stressed about forgetting something. Don’t forget essential items like toiletries, a power bank, and any necessary medications, ensuring they comply with transportation regulations.

Other Considerations:

  1. Check power socket compatibility and buy adapters if necessary.
  2. Consider downloading translation apps.
  3.  Download books, music and films on your phone, so you stay entertained during long journeys. Avoid bringing unnecessary gadgets or books with you, as they take up space and add weight to your luggage.
  4.  Arrange care for pets and home plants if you’ll be away for an extended period.
  5. Ensure your phone and cloud storage have sufficient memory for capturing memories along the way.

With this comprehensive checklist in hand, you know how to plan any trip, whether you are traveling solo or with friends. Do not hesitate to save it for your next journey. Bon voyage!
